foreword: do not read if you think that Formula One is about cars going around in circles.
i missed the greatest show on earth.
HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX
6th August 2006.
coz of band concert.
well opportunity costs for ponning band concert and wasting $12 on the tickets are not worth it. but honestly i watched qualifying and crazy la i was really tempted to pon the concert for the race.
aniwae this is gonna be one memorable race for years to come.
the drama unfolded during practice, when world champion fernando alonso was deemed to have committed dangerous driving and also overtaken under yellow flags and therefore 2 second penalties would be imposed on all his qualifying laps. soon after, 7 time world champion michael schumacher was imposed an identical penalization with that of alonso's for overtaking three cars under red flags. This practically ended both drivers' chances of making it for the final shootout of the top ten cars.
During qualifying, the striking red of the Ferraris were the obvious fastest car with the best package as Schumi and Massa both clocked the fastest times during Q1 and Q2. However during Q3, with Massa having to carry the weight of the entire Ferrari team on his shoulders, his inexperience showed and he drifted wide on many corners and made too many unnecessary errors to fail to set a timing worthy of the ferrari.
however as the clock read 0:00, many cars were still on their final sprinting lap and at that moment in time massa held the fastest lap. Soon cars started streaming across the finish line - de la rosa clocked p2 but this was soon topped by button and then subsequently topped by barrichello. however p1 still belonged to massa until raikkonen - the last car to finish - came in with a stunning time that won him pole position for the second week in a row.
a crazy qualifying session saw much drama, and schumi in 11th while alonso in 15th.
It was not going to be a boring race.
The pre-race drama was definitely focused on the wet track - the first wet race this year. Tyre choices were gonna prove to be either domineering or destructing - Michelin runners had mostly chosen intermediate tyres while Bridgestone runners all chose full wet tyres.
The start was amazing to itself. no great collisions at turn one but massa was losing big grounds to de la rosa and barrichello. By lap 2 - Schumacher was already up to fifth while Alonso was up to 8th. By lap 5 Button was up to 7th. Amazing starts for three drivers.
However witnessing Massa's great fall from the heavens over the opening few laps proved that Bridgestone's tyre choices were a big big mistake. By lap 4 Alonso was hounding Schumacher for p4 - and eventually overtook him - there was no way the significantly slower ferrari on full wet tyres was gonna compete with the flying blue renault on intermediate tyres.
All over the track was unstoppable drama with the overtaking seemingly unlimited on a track which was supposed to be narrow and impossible to overtake. Kubica was doing a wonderful debut by climbing up several places with spectacular moves after spinning on the opening laps. The two title contenders were simply flying and so were the Hondas and McLarens. By lap 9 it was p1 and p2 to the McLarens, Alonso in p3, Button in p4 and Schumi in p5.
However there was no stopping the world champion as he subsequently took the lead and extended the gap with raikkonen to 30 seconds. On lap 25 Raikkonen crashes out after a lapse of concentration and the safety car was deployed, banishing alonso's mighty lead to almost nothing. by lap 30 it was alonso, button, delarosa, barrichello, heidfeld, coulthard, schumacher, massa.
The track had now dried up to a certain extent and there was a dry line for drivers to follow. Strategies now played a very important role as some drivers gambled on changing the type of tyres while others staked on remaining with what they were using currently.
The race was now effectively between Button and Alonso, both cars having the pace to match each other and no other cars in the race having the pace to match them. But just at this time Schumacher started to show his prowness by charging up the field - and soon became the fastest man on the track, even faster than button and alonso.
Another major turning point of the race in lap 52 - leader alonso crashing out with a rear wheel nut problem. The remaining front runners jostle for position - by lap 60 the positionings were button, schumacher, delarosa, heidfeld, barrichello.
However three laps later Schumi's tyres started to show visible signs of wear and tear and was under constant bombardment from De La Rosa. With three laps left the McLaren driver finally overtook Schumacher as the former world champion now faced another problem - a surging heidfeld.
Eventually Schumi yielded with his car something like 3 seconds per lap down on Heidfeld. However with two laps left Schumacher appeared to have clutch problems and had to retire into the pits. A real pity as it would have cut Alonso's championship lead to only 6 points and the Ferrari constructors champions to about 5 points.
In the end we see the top three drivers in the standings crash out, and surprise Button took the win. De La rosa and heidfeld were 2nd and third followed by barrichello, coulthard, ralf, kubica, Massa.
oh crap i missed such a great show. damnit. ohwell its time to slp. adios!
