i didn't really intend on doing this, but i can't help it. that flow of thoughts is simply too immense to bear it all in my mind.
It has been, in every single way you look at it (be it upside down or inside out), simply tremendous. This whole journey, it has. Ever since secondary 1 in that fateful year where i somehow yearned to join bowling, even though that school administration simply had to restrain me with track and field, yet in the end they cannot do what they cannot force, and this was one of them. I ended up in ten-pin bowling, and now six years on, here is still where i stand. That same passion, and that same desire to win.
But of course, the circumstances are different.
Coming to SAJC last year, was only for a reason. At least at that point in time, only one reason mattered, and that is bowling. Coming in as a DSA student, one that was pledged to bowling, it probably made me even more committed to this cause. And in any sense, it was this cause that i believed in before i made my choice.
The Overall Schools Championship.
I don't know why, I don't know how, but this is something i want to hold up so badly i could almost do anything for it. That desire within is so great that it takes more than words to explain. I remember in my sec 4 year, and all that decision had to be made about which school we wanted to go to and stuff, it finally took one thing to sway my mind and make a firm choice.
It was one afternoon, after bowling at the South Zone tournament that year. Vic pulled me aside and talked to me, and we discussed about the options open for us and everything else that mattered to it. And over lunch and one plate of chicken rice I made my choice. And only one thing mattered - that in SAJC the only singular thing we care about and go for is the overall schools' championship. It was team focus, or rather a focus as a team, that allows SAJC Bowling to strive forward and move. And it was a belief to this cause that i came here.
Also i remember last year, the period of time when the captaincy was offered to me. It was a weird choice i would say, given the little bits and pieces everywhere that i knew would make the job a stressful one. Somehow rather, i changed my initial mindset and took up the job. One year on and pending my imminent stepping down, looking back on all that has been done, I certainly trust i began with the right frame of mind - that is to spread the belief and commit the team to the cause that we are here to become a team, to bowl as a team, and ultimately to win as a team.
Often people tell me that bowling's an individualistic game, where the teamwork is not important and other things along those lines. Indeed, most people would view it that way and I will not go out to say that they are wrong. From the surface, I will agree to that viewpoint. After all on first impression bowling is indeed an individual game. You bowl your own game, and if you bowl extremely well you win. That's the bottom line.
But i'm glad. Cause this is one of the most important things i have learnt from this game. Most sports like basketball or soccer rely on the ability of their teammates to coerce and formulate with theirs to bring everyone through. That imminent factor of working together is vital. But what i dare say is that such sports can do about otherwise, and thus it becomes so much easier as it would only serve to benefit everybody by doing so. Any other way would hardly ever work ever.
Rather, in bowling, indeed you can survive on your own. You can go out there and bowl extremely well and win and win alone. Sure that is not a problem. But it is that ability to see through so much else and see the importance of bowling together as a team, not for your own self but for everyone else around you that separates the good from the better, and the better from the best. It is this quality that is voluntarily chosen to exist that makes it even more the impressive, and thus at the end of the day if people come up to you and say bowling's an individualistic game then you can just tell that person you have the most team-based vitality game in the world.
It has been six years, six tiring years, six happening years, six exciting years. All that work and sweat and everything else comes down to this final one, a finale that is like no other. Personally it will be the most significant one of the six, having been given the honour of being the captain of the team, leading the team into this championship. It'll be hard, tiresome at times, but all I've gotta do now is to keep everybody on track, keep their minds and hearts intact, and goals as one. Also at the same time push them all towards achieving that little bit extra that just might allow us to reach the highest heights.
TO THE TEAM: It's been brilliant, all of you are. Now it is time to transfer that onto the lanes and into pinfalls. I don't have much to say here really, all that has been said has already been said. Remember, always bowl as a team and work towards our team goals. And no prizes for guessing what that is.
what a serious post. -.-
today was singles event! all that wait finally translated to this. wah i was a nervous wreck the previous night. thanks thanks to
you
for helping me cool. Did alright i guess. hmmm. now striving to do much better. and for everyone else too we gotta really strive harder to get where we wanna.
anyway the highlight of the day was probably the mechanics. goodness the whole alley must have been cursing and swearing at them. i can guarantee ya they're damn lousy.
for example. the right lane i was bowling at had no pins. ZERO pins set. meanwhile the left lane had a full rack. ALL TEN PINS. so i went to call the mechanic.
"ER. HELLO. My lane there the pins never set."
"OH so need to reset ar?
"Ya ya."
Following she comes to the pair of lanes i was bowling at. She stares at both lanes, then she asks:
"So which lane ar?"
*I'm feeling so happy now.
You
should know why. =)
